Why You’ll Love It

It tastes amazing. The combination of fresh watermelon chunks, frozen strawberries, and a hint of banana gives this drink a summer flavor you’ll love. You can also add a squeeze of lime juice or lemon juice to help brighten it up!

It’s nourishing. Watermelon contains powerful antioxidants like lycopene, vitamin C, and beta-carotene. Paired with fiber-rich strawberries, you’ll get plenty of nutrients in each sip!

It’s hydrating. Since watermelon is over 90% water, this smoothie is a great way to rehydrate when it’s warm outside.

Ingredients You’ll Need

This watermelon smoothie recipe requires just 4 simple ingredients, but you can get creative with what you have on hand! I use almond milk for creaminess, but you can use oat milk, hemp milk, or coconut water as the base.

Add half of a Medjool date, a squeeze of honey, or a touch of maple syrup for extra sweetness. This will vary based on the sweetness of your watermelon each time you make it.

Looking to add some protein? This smoothie has a delicate flavor, so remember that additions might affect the overall taste. You can add protein powder, greek yogurt, or some rolled oats to help make it more filling.

How to Make a Watermelon Smoothie

1. Add the ingredients.

Add the fresh watermelon, frozen strawberries, banana, and almond milk into a high-speed blender.

watermelon cut on a cutting board and added to blender.

2. Blend.

Secure the lid on your blender, and blend until the ingredients are totally pulverized. Taste the smoothie, and make any adjustments as needed.

Add a splash of maple syrup, honey, or half of a pitted Medjool date for a sweeter flavor. Add a handful of ice cubes and blend again for a slushy texture. You can also add a tart flavor by adding a splash of lime or lemon juice.

As soon as the smoothie tastes good, it’s ready to serve.

Storage Tip: This smoothie has the best taste and texture when you enjoy it right after making it. However, if you have leftovers to save, you can freeze them in a popsicle mold for a frozen treat later. If you store it in the fridge, it will have a liquid consistency later, and the flavor won’t taste as fresh.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can you use frozen watermelon instead of fresh?

Yes, if you have frozen watermelon on hand, you can use that, too! In that case, the watermelon will be diluted because you’ll need more liquid for blending. For the best results, use fresh strawberries and bananas when using the frozen watermelon, so you won’t need to add as much liquid to blend this watermelon smoothie.

Can I use another fruit?

If you don’t have strawberries, you can also use frozen mango or pineapple in this smoothie for more of a tropical flavor. Remember that the watermelon flavor might not be as pronounced in that case.

Can I use coconut milk?

Canned coconut milk doesn’t always blend well with frozen fruit, as the fat can solidify and create small chunks of fat in your smoothie. Refrigerated coconut milk sold in a carton shouldn’t be an issue.

What can I do with the leftover watermelon rind?

I like to save the rind for juicing! You can add it to any juice recipe you love. The rind has a very tough texture, so it’s not ideal for chewing, in my opinion, but it does contain nutrients

  1. Made this yesterday, doubled it for the 4 of us. Everyone loved it. Such good texture, color, and flavor.

  2. I loved this drink so much. I didn’t use the date so it wasn’t too thick. It was a nice and refreshing drink after my run.

  3. Awful- not enough liquid in this. It was like a thick pile of glue ice cream, couldn’t even pour it. Had to add more milk and some juice and ice to get any consistency. Scraped it off sides, blade and use a spoon. Also rather bland even with honey.

    1. If you freeze the smoothie, it will become a popsicle, which could be fun! I bet you could freeze the components in a smoothie bag, then dump them into the blender and add liquid when you’re ready to blend, too. You’ll probably need more liquid when using frozen watermelon, so the flavor will be slightly more diluted that way.

  4. Thank you for pointing out that watermelon can help prevent sun damage. This recipe has become a staple breakfast on beach days 🙂

  5. This was super.good.Used a whole medjool date. I added some old fashioned oats as someone else suggested. Used my Ninja. Frozen watermelon and banana with fresh strawberries and almond milk.
