This Apple Smoothie is unbelievably good. Paired with cinnamon and peanut butter, it has a creamy texture and tastes like Fall in a cup!
Can You Put a Whole Apple in a Smoothie?
There’s no need to peel the apple for this recipe, but I do recommend cutting away the core and seeds. Apple seeds contain amygdalin, which can release cyanide (a poison) when it comes into contact with the digestive enzymes in our bodies.
It’s not likely that you’d get cyanide poisoning from eating only a few apple seeds, but I think it’s best to stay on the safe side and discard the seeds before making this smoothie.
Which Apples Are Best for Smoothies?
I think sweet apples work best for this smoothie, like Gala, Fuji, and Honeycrisp, but you can use practically any variety that you have on hand.
For a more tart flavor, try using green apples.
Can you freeze Apples for Smoothies?
Yes! Here’s how to freeze apples, and once you have them you can use frozen apples in this smoothie, instead of a fresh one. It’s a great way to use up apples you have on hand, before they go bad!
When using frozen apples for this smoothie, you’ll need to use a full 1 cup of liquid (possibly even a little bit more) and you can omit the ice, since the frozen apple will add a thick, icy texture.
I prefer this smoothie when it’s made with fresh apples, as it’s a little less fibrous in texture, but either way works!
How to Make It
Here’s what you’ll need for this apple smoothie:
- Apple
- Frozen Banana (how to freeze bananas)
- Peanut Butter (here’s how to make homemade peanut butter)
- Ground Flax (optional, but helps make it more filling)
- Cinnamon
- Milk (I use almond milk)
Just add the ingredients to a blender, and blend until smooth. It might seem like this recipe doesn’t call for enough liquid, but the apple will liquefy in the blender, so just wait and see! You can always add more liquid, if you need to.
For a slushy texture, I like to add a few ice cubes and then blend again.
The added ice helps to minimize the fibrous texture of the apples, so it tastes like you’re drinking an apple milkshake!
Ingredients
- 1 medium apple , cut into chunks (7 oz.; I use Gala apples)
- 1/2 frozen banana (3.5 oz)
- 1 tablespoon ground flax seeds (5 grams)
- 1 heaping tablespoon peanut butter
- 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
- 1/4 cup almond milk (or milk of choice)
- 1 cup ice cubes (about 4-5 large cubes)
Instructions
- In a high-speed blender, combine the apple, banana, flax, peanut butter, cinnamon, and milk. Blend until smooth, stopping to scrape down the blender as needed. The apple should become liquified, which will add more "liquid" to the mix, but if you need to add extra liquid, you can start by adding 2 tablespoons at a time.
- Once the mixture is totally smooth, add in the ice and blend again until a slushy texture is achieved. Serve right away for the best texture and flavor.

Fantastic! Was honestly not expecting it to taste this good. I somewhat skeptically added the peanut butter and the apples with peel. The funny thing is, I have 4 teenagers who like apples but won’t eat them if there is the slightest imperfection, meaning I am constantly eating imperfect apples. If I don’t, they get old and I never know what to do wtih them. Well, now I have a solution! It’s important when making this smoothie to blend it completely, the peel gets churned up which means the result is not gritty. Very tasty!
