Apple Donuts are a creative, healthy snack! They are easy to customize with your favorite toppings and take just minutes to assemble.

These “donuts” are not the kind baked in a donut pan. But, if you’re bored with sliced apples and peanut butter, this concept makes them a little more fun with a new look!

This is the perfect activity for young kids to get involved with, or you can have them ready to go as a quick after-school snack. It’s gluten-free, dairy-free, and fast to prepare.

Ingredients You’ll Need

This recipe is a choose-your-own-adventure type of thing. You can pick your favorite apple to snack on, like Honeycrisp, Gala, or Fuji, then pair it with your favorite nut butter.

Almond butter, peanut butter, or even sunflower butter will do!

Then, choose your toppings. I like to use hemp hearts for added protein, but you can also use mini chocolate chips, sprinkles, a pinch of apple pie spice, or ground nutmeg.

A flaky salt is also an option if you like the sweet & salty flavor.

How to Make Apple “Donuts”

Slice the apple into thin large rounds, about 1/8-inch to 1/4-inch thick, then remove the seeds in the center of each slice.

(You can do this with an apple corer first if you have one.)

A small cookie cutter or the round side of a frosting tip will work well, too.

Once you’ve removed all of the center seeds, spread a thin layer of nut butter on each slice. Then it’s time to decorate them!

Sprinkle on hemp hearts for protein, some granola for crunch, or a shaved chocolate bar for a sweet treat. Mix and match the toppings, if you like!

Serve these right away for the best flavor and texture. Apples tend to brown over time, so these aren’t a great make-ahead snack.

Ingredients

Apple "Donuts"

  • 1 large apple
  • 2 tablespoons peanut butter (or other nut/seed butter)

Topping Ideas

  • hemp hearts
  • granola
  • mini chocolate chips or chopped chocolate
  • sprinkles or chopped nuts

Instructions

  • Hold the apple sideways so you can slice rounds, directly through the core with the seeds. You should get roughly 7 to 8 slices from a large apple, depending on how thick you make the slices. (I like them to be between ⅛-inch and ¼-inch thick.)
  • Use an apple corer, a small cookie cutter, or the round side of a frosting tip to cut out circles from the center of each apple slice. This will remove their seeds and make each slice look like a donut shape.
  • Spread a thin layer of peanut butter on each slice, then add your favorite toppings. You can mix and match! Add granola or chopped nuts for a crunchy bite, sprinkles or chocolate for a sweet flavor, or hemp hearts for added protein. Serve them right away for the best flavor and texture.

Notes

Nutrition information is for 2 apple slices with peanut butter, assuming you get 8 slices from 1 large apple. This information is just a rough estimate, not a guarantee, since your toppings will vary each time.
